Do you have a backyard and let your dog relieve himself outside? Most dog parents do this because, let's be honest, it's comfortable ... But how to get rid of dog poop smell in the yard? Don't worry. You don't have to live with unpleasant odors outside because the solution is at your fingertips. Just follow the practical tips that we present below.
Best ways to get rid of dog poop smell in yard
Luckily, there are several easy ways to remove the smell of poop from your yard. Let's see the most effective and easy to carry out.
1. Use water
Believe it or not, this is the easiest way to eliminate the smell of dog poop outside. Of course, you should be careful because for it to work, the cleaning has to be done almost immediately. That is to say: clean as soon as your dog has defecated.
Of course, you can add soap for a deeper cleaning (as long as you don't put soap on the grass). And if possible, opt for organic and natural soap.
2. Make a homemade spray to eliminate bad odors
Did you know that baking soda is one of the most effective ingredients to neutralize ugly odors? We already told you about it in our post on how to remove dog poop stains from the carpet, and here we repeat it: you should always have baking soda at home. It will help you keep your home cleaner and shinier.
To make your homemade cleaner, mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda with 2 cups of lukewarm water. Add 2 cups of white vinegar and mix well. So easy, you will have a powerful odor eliminator that you can spray throughout your yard, or only in the affected areas. It is so efficient that you will be surprised!
If you want to incorporate a rich aroma, you can add a tablespoon of dish soap. If it is natural and ecological, much better! Another option? A couple of drops of lavender essential oil.
Note: if you add one of the last 2 ingredients, you will not be able to apply the spray on grass. This last option is suitable for floors.
3. Use an Odor Eliminator
If DIY is not your thing, you can also buy an eliminator scent. There are many ones on the market. Most are made with enzymes that absorb bad odors from dog poop. Of course, we advise you to make sure that it is not toxic to your furry friend.
Note: follow the manufacturer's instructions on the application.
4. Put agricultural Lime Powder in your yard
Have you heard of agricultural lime powder? This material is a soil amendment product that is used to increase the pH levels of the soil for later cultivation.
Of course, check if it is safe for pets, since some varieties are not. Once you have made sure of this point, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
In general, it is recommended to sprinkle the product in the areas most affected by the smell and then water the soil.
5. Cleaning surfaces with bleach
Bleach is one of the best products to kill pathogens and germs. Therefore, it can be your ally to spotless hard surfaces and eliminate bad odors. Of course, it can only be used if you have a patio or porch in your backyard. To do this, dilute ½ cup of bleach for every gallon of water and clean thoroughly.
Remember to rinse the area thoroughly so that your puppy does not come into contact with this component. Keep in mind that it burns. For that reason, you can't use it on grass or plants.
Instead of getting rid of dog poop smell, prevent this situation!
The best option is, as always, to prevent and not cure. For it:
- Train your puppy to relieve himself in one place, rather than across your backyard.
- Buy 100% plastic-free and compostable bags for your dog's poop and collect canine waste quickly. Remember that you can incorporate them into your compost if you have a special compost bin for dog poop.
- Choose quality food for your dog. Did you know that poor quality food can cause digestive problems and therefore diarrhea? In addition, it can affect the smell of your dog's poop, making it more unpleasant.
Is it clear to you how to get rid of the dog poop smell in your yard? As you can see, it is easier than you thought, although you must be constant when applying these solutions.
